The South Africa Garden
Route is a narrow coastal belt between the Indian Ocean on
the one side, and mountain ranges parallel with the coast,
where the distance between coast and mountains can range between
10 - 25 kilometres. Cold fronts move in over the Indian Ocean
and the mountain ranges will stop these cold fronts with abundant
rainfall on this narrow coastal belt. This creates a perfectrain
forest situation, and from there the lush, evergreen vegitation
- "The Garden Route of South Africa".
It also creates a situation where, beyond the high mountain
ranges, areas which can be described as "semi - desert"
- areas with very low rainfall - the areas referred to as
the Little Karoo, and has become world reknowned as the Ostrich
Capital of the World - Oudtshoorn.
The town of Oudtshoorn is blessed to have a unique mountain
range known as the "Swartberg Mountain Range" -
Black Mountain Range directly translated - which has extraordinary
stalactite and stalacmite formations, which are known as the
Famous Cango Caves. The Cango Caves are the second most visited
natural attraction in South Africa, just behind Table Mountain
in Cape Town.
