This 'Valley of Grace' was founded in 1738 by Moravian missionary Georg Schmidt, who settled at Baviaanskloof. The Khoi were converted and taught to read and write. Despite efforts by the Cape Dutch clergy to bring Schmidt´s mission work to an end, Genadendal´s mission outreach emerged victorious-at one stage becoming the largest settlement in the old Cape colony after Cape Town.

Home industries flourished after 1806. Soon the herneuters became renowned for forging knives.
South Africa´s first Teachers' Training College was established in 1838. Politics of the day sadly prevented Genadendal from developing its potential to become a major centre of learning. In 1926 the Teachers´ Training College was closed down and residents were forced to secure work on surrounding farms.
